Patients undergo colon surgery for a number of conditions including: colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s), colon strictures and diverticulitis. Surgery to remove all or part of the colon is known as colectomy.
Treatment: Traditional “open” colon surgery procedures may require a single long abdominal incision. Traditional surgery results in an average hospital stay of a week or more. Less invasive options are available such as laparoscopic surgery which has the advantage of using small incisions and a quick recovery.
