Obesity and overweight can affect self-esteem, health and overall.
For those who struggle with their weight, a bariatric procedure can help them better achieve their health and weight loss goals.
When considering a bariatric procedure, it’s important to make certain lifestyle changes to give yourself the best chance of success.
If you smoke, you may wonder if you can smoke before and after surgery. I recommend to all my patients to stop smoking before and after bariatric procedure.
And here are my reasons why:
Smoking can increase the risk of:
- Blood clots
- Respiratory complications
- Sepsis
- Poor wound healing
- Stomach ulcer formation
- Bleeding ulcers
- Formation of perforations or holes in the stomach.
- Stomach obstruction or blockage
- Stenosis or narrowing of the entrance to the stomach pouch, which can cause pain, nausea and vomiting.
If you are about to have bariatric surgery, I advise you to stop smoking at least 12 weeks before your surgical procedure, and you many complications will be voided.
