Gastroesophageal reflux disease is characterized by acid refluxing or “backing up” from the stomach into the esophagus. The heartburn is described as a strong burning sensation in the area between your ribs or just below your neck. The sensation may radiate down the chest and into the throat and neck.
Treatment: Patients who do not respond well to lifestyle changes or medications, or who continually require medications to control their symptoms, are ideal candidates for anti-reflux surgery which consists of reinforcing the “valve” between the esophagus and the stomach by wrapping the lower end of the esophagus with the upper portion of the stomach, resembling the bun that wraps around the sausage of a hot dog.
