Some of the following diseases are treated with splenic surgery: Autoimmune thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP): this is the most common reason. In this disease, a patient’s platelet count is low because the body produces antibodies against platelets that cause their destruction in the spleen, the patient suffers a lot of bleeding. Hemolytic anemia: in this disease, the body produces antibodies against red blood cells that are subsequently destroyed in the spleen. Malignancy: Rarely, patients with cancers of the infection-fighting cells, known as lymphoma or certain types of leukemia, require removal of the spleen.
Treatment: Usually the spleen is extracted laparoscopically, and this consists of placing cannulas (forceps) in your abdomen and inflating your abdomen to observe your spleen and with specialized material they will remove it and extract it through an incision in your abdomen.
